The masseter muscle , or masseter muscle in medical jargon , is one of the most important muscles in chewing. If the chewing muscle is overdeveloped or overstressed, such as through teeth grinding, it increases in size, resulting in a wider jawline. This is often perceived as a stigma for those affected. But imagine that can be changed within a few days. The solution is: Botox. This is because Botox relaxes the muscle with a few precisely placed injections, reducing the size of the muscle without restricting its functions. The result? A subtle narrowing of the facial profile and a return to restful sleep without teeth grinding. Interested? If you complain about grinding your teeth at night (bruxism) or are unhappy with the shape of your face, then masseter treatment with Botox is worth considering.
“Why wear a bite splint every night when treatment with Botox can improve teeth grinding after just a few days?” – Dr. Peter Herndlhofer
The effectiveness of masseter treatment with Botox is based on scientific studies and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy. Botulinum toxin, or Botox for short, acts on the chewing muscle, causing it to relax and become smaller over time. And why is this so effective? The key lies in the right dosage and correct application. This narrows the muscle so that teeth grinding is impossible, but normal chewing is maintained. Botox has another advantage: There is no downtime, the treatment is quick and the results are visible within a few weeks. But it’s not just the external appearance that benefits. This can also reduce tension and pain in the jaw area caused by teeth grinding. A relaxed masseter muscle can therefore not only improve quality of life, but also reduce the long-term consequences of teeth grinding. The masseter muscle usually becomes larger as a result of teeth grinding. Therefore, more Botox is sometimes necessary to achieve a satisfactory result. This means that, depending on the severity, we often recommend repeated treatment every 4 weeks to relax the entire muscle. We will of course point this out to you during the consultation. Even if treatment with Botox for teeth grinding protects you from the consequences such as tooth damage or temporomandibular joint wear, Botox for the masseter is not usually covered by health insurance. We take sufficient time for our initial consultation. If you would like to have a Botox treatment of the chewing muscle or a Gummy Smile correction with us in Vienna, the consultation is free of charge. If you can’t decide right away, we charge a consultation fee of €140. But the good news is that we will credit €50 back to you for future treatment.
