The different options for intimate hair removal with laser

There are several systems that can be used for lasering the intimate area, which differ in technical details such as the wavelength. Which method works best often depends on the respective hair and skin type. Here is a brief overview:

  • Diode lasers have a variable wavelength, which means they can be flexibly adapted to different skin and hair types. This is a great advantage, as there are often areas in the genital area that are more pigmented due to hormones.
  • Alexandrite lasers are well suited to dark hair on light skin, such as in the armpit area. They are not ideal for more pigmented skin, for example in the labia area. To put it plainly: the treatment is less effective there and can cause pain.
  • Nd:YAG lasers are generally also suitable for darker skin types. However, they are used less frequently in the intimate area. This is because the greater penetration depth of this laser means that the treatment can be uncomfortable.
  • IPL devices (= Intense Pulsed Light) are not real lasers, they only emit high-energy light pulses. Because they work less effectively, more treatments are required compared to lasers, which increases the costs. We do not recommend IPL devices for home use because the risk of side effects in the sensitive intimate area is simply too high.

How laser hair removal in the genital area works at GoAesthetic

But what exactly happens during a laser treatment in the intimate area? Lasers emit high-energy light, which is absorbed by color pigments in the hair and converted into heat. This short heat pulse damages the hair root and the surrounding cells that are responsible for hair growth. As a result, existing hair falls out and new hair does not grow back as quickly. Laser hair removal for men is particularly popular, as it offers an effective and permanent solution for sensitive areas such as the genital area.

However, this only works on hair that is currently in the growth phase. Therefore, around 5 to 6 sessions are necessary to catch all hair roots in their sensitive phase. However, the hair will be noticeably thinner and finer after the first treatment.

What do you need to consider for laser hair removal in the bikini and intimate area?

Before treatment:

  • Shave the areas to be treated 1 day in advance

  • Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds 1-2 weeks beforehand

  • No waxing, sugaring or plucking for 3 weeks before the treatment

  • No treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

After treatment:

  • Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds for 2-3 weeks

  • Protect your face with sun cream – we recommend SPF 50

Frequently asked questions about intimate hair removal with laser

Our Lightsheer® diode laser from Lumenis has integrated sapphire contact cooling, which makes the treatment virtually painless, even in the sensitive genital area. Please note that you may be more sensitive to pain during your period.

The following is important before laser treatment of the genital area:

  • Avoid waxing, sugaring, plucking and hair removal creams for three weeks before the treatment because we need intact hair roots for the treatment.
  • Avoid tanning beds and sun exposure in the week before treatment.
  • Shave the intimate area one day before the treatment – at least the areas that you would like to have lasered.

In principle, the entire genital area can be treated with laser, including:

  • Inside of the thighs
  • Inguinal region
  • Buttocks
  • Mound of Venus
  • Labia
  • Penis

On request, we can also laser only the bikini area. These are the areas that are not covered by bikini bottoms.

Please note that laser hair removal only works optimally on dark, thick hair. Light blonde, gray or very fine hair does not respond to the treatment.

Laser hair removal works particularly well in the intimate area and under the armpits, as the hair there is particularly strong. You will see the first good results after just a few treatments. However, you should plan for a total of around 6 treatments.
