Medical microneedling is particularly suitable for smoothing acne scars or reducing fine facial wrinkles or pigmentation spots. Due to the greater needling depth (up to 3 mm), the skin reacts immediately to the microneedling treatment with redness and sometimes punctiform bleeding. Andafter the treatment, we recommend a cooling moisturizing mask and consistent sun protection (SPF 30+) for the next 48 hours to minimize redness and ensure optimal results.

When is microneedling not recommended?

Microneedling is a proven method of skin regeneration, but there are certain contraindications for which treatment should be postponed or avoided in order to prevent possible complications.

Active skin infections and skin injuries: In the case of acute skin infections – for example caused by bacteria or viruses such as severe acne, herpes simplex or shingles – microneedling should only be carried out after complete healing. The same applies to open wounds, fresh injuries or sunburn, as the microchannels created during treatment can make it easier for germs to penetrate. People with a tendency to keloids or hypertrophic scars should also be careful, as the treatment can increase the risk of scarring.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: We do not carry out microneedling treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is because the skin is particularly sensitive during this phase and the immune system reacts differently than usual. For precautionary reasons, we therefore recommend that you only undergo treatment after you have finished breastfeeding.
Taking medication and medical treatments: People taking systemic blood thinners (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), Marcoumar) have an increased risk of bleeding and hematoma. Similarly, after taking isotretinoin (Ciscutan) or high-dose topical retinoids, you should wait at least six months after completing therapy, as the skin may be more vulnerable. You should also consult your doctor if you are taking medication for autoimmune diseases at the same time.

On average, 4-8 microneedling treatments are recommended with an interval of 4-6 weeks between treatments. If microneedling is not the right choice, at GoAesthetic we offer safe alternatives to best meet your skin needs. For example, if you want to see quick anti-aging effects, hyaluronic acid injections may be a better choice.

Can you do microneedling at home?

DIY microneedling has limited effectiveness and increases the risk of infection and scarring. Microneedling at home is possible in principle, but carries considerable risks and is not recommended from a medical point of view. The home devices required for this, such as dermarollers or dermapens, can be purchased easily and cheaply, especially online, but generally have shorter needles (0.1 to 0.3 mm) compared to medical devices used by professionals. Some inexpensive devices even have similar-sounding names to well-known medical microneedling pens.

However, despite their easy availability, home devices harbor several risks. In addition to limited effectiveness and inferior quality, hygiene deficiencies and incorrect aftercare are also serious risks.

Hygiene checklist: Minimum requirements that home appliances often struggle to meet:

Limitation of DIY devices with short needles

At-home microneedling devices are often designed to improve the absorption of skin care products by lightly puncturing only the top layer of skin (epidermis). Although they are relatively safe, this surface treatment is not sufficient to trigger deeper skin regeneration and collagen production, as is the case with professional microneedling, due to the short needle length. Professional microneedling treatments, such as those performed at our institute in Vienna, are carried out exclusively with sterile, medically certified disposable needles. In contrast, many DIY devices work with reusable attachments, the sterility of which cannot usually be reliably guaranteed.

Medically inappropriate use

Although some needling devices have longer needles – sometimes even longer – there is a risk of considerable skin damage if they are used incorrectly, which can lead to permanent scars. This is because the needling depth must be adapted to the face and facial region. The increasing risk of infection should also not be neglected.

Poor hygiene conditions

When microneedling at home, poor hygiene management means an increasing risk of infection. Improperly disinfected needles or reused attachments pose an enormous risk of infection. Our medically trained specialist staff always work with sterile disposable gloves and under strict hygiene standards. When microneedling is carried out independently, this important protective barrier is often missing. In a professional institute, the devices are carefully cleaned with approved disinfectants before and after each treatment. Home devices, on the other hand, are often inadequately disinfected or disinfected with non-medically approved cleaning agents, which can increase the germ load. In addition, the repeated use of the same needling attachment leads to blunt needles, which increase the risk of micro-injuries and scarring.

Dangers of unsuitable products after microneedling

Many people use unsuitable products after microneedling at home that were not developed for damaged skin. Products with silicones, essential oils or fragrances can penetrate deeper into the skin through the open microchannels and cause intolerance or inflammation. In the worst case, this can lead to granulomatous reactions in which the body tries to encapsulate these foreign substances, which can lead to long-term skin problems.

Alles war super professionell, und ich wurde vorab sehr gut aufgeklärt, sodass ich mich die ganze Zeit gut aufgehoben gefühlt habe.

Besonders positiv fand ich, dass mir vor der Behandlung eine Betäubungscreme aufgetragen wurde. Dadurch waren die Schmerzen wirklich bei 0 von 10. Erst danach, als die Tuchmaske aufgelegt wurde, hat es ganz leicht gebrannt, aber wirklich nur minimal, etwa 0,5 von 10. Also absolut gut aushaltbar und sehr überschaubar.

Ich bin jetzt vier Tage nach der Behandlung und kann nur Positives sagen. Es hat sich nichts entzündet, die Rötung war nach etwa eineinhalb Tagen schon wieder weg, und meine Haut fühlt sich wirklich gut an. Bei mir wurde mit 1,25 mm Nadeln gearbeitet, und ich würde die Behandlung auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen.

Ich werde ganz sicher noch öfter hingehen.

Important info about the treatment with microneedling

Quality is important to us and is always our top priority at GoAesthetic. That’s why we take plenty of time for the initial medical consultation. You can discuss with Dr. Peter Herndlhofer during a personal consultation whether microneedling is right for you.

Please note that a subsequent treatment is unfortunately not possible for organizational reasons and the consultation costs €200. But the good news is that we will credit €50 back to you for every future appointment – regardless of whether it’s microneedling or another treatment.

What do you have to consider when microneedling?

Before treatment:

No active inflammation in the treated area (e.g.: fever blisters). If you are prone to fever blisters, we recommend medication prophylaxis two days before the microneedling.
Some blood-thinning or anticoagulant medications should be temporarily discontinued after consulting your doctor.
If you have recently had a wrinkle injection, it should have been at least two weeks ago before the medical microneedling is carried out.

After treatment:

No sports on the day of treatment.
No wrinkle treatment with Botox or hyaluronic acid injections in the treated area for a few days.
No scratching or pressing of the treated skin.
No massages or cosmetic treatments on the face for 2 days.
Be sure to apply sunscreen with SPF 30 outdoors for 5 days to protect the skin from UV rays.
No steam bath and sauna visits for 1 week.

How much does microneedling cost in Vienna?

At GoAesthetic, a session of medical microneedling for the face costs €225; an additional €70 is charged for the neck or décolletage. Microneedling with autologous blood (vampire facelift) costs €390; a package of four sessions is €1,480 instead of €1,560. For classic microneedling , the price drops to €180 per session as soon as you book multiple treatments at once —it doesn’t matter whether you book two, three, or four; everything you pay for upfront costs €180. And if you’d rather pay session by session but book your appointments in advance, you’ll also receive a discounted package rate at the clinic. This is because visible results typically require four treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, which is why the package is worthwhile for almost everyone. Of course, you can find cheaper offers in Vienna as well, though these are usually for cosmetic needling with a shallower penetration depth.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of microneedling treatments varies depending on the treatment goal. On average, 4–8 microneedling sessions are needed, with a 3–6-week break between treatments to give the skin sufficient time to regenerate. For specific goals, such as reducing scars and stretch marks, we generally recommend 5–8 treatments, as these conditions require longer and more intensive treatment. For long-term skin care, one or two refresher treatments per year may be beneficial.

How long does the effect of microneedling last?

The duration of the effect of microneedling depends on the number of treatments performed and the treatment goal. As an anti-ageing treatment, microneedling can lead to long-lasting improvements in skin structure if performed regularly. The procedure can also smooth the skin surface of scars, especially sunken acne scars, as new collagen fibers are formed. However, the skin type also plays an important role: younger skin or skin with mild structural changes usually reacts more quickly and visibly, while deeper wrinkles or pronounced scars require several sessions to achieve stable and long-term results.

Is the microneedling treatment painful?

Usually not, but this depends on the subjective feeling and the desired treatment: Acne scars or skin rejuvenation? Stretch marks or wrinkles? Depending on the treatment, we need to change the depth of the needles. But: Traditional techniques with dermarollers are often more painful than the Dermapen 4™ – despite the same penetration depth. As the fine needles of the Dermaroller penetrate much more slowly than those of the Dermapen 4™, which is used in our institute in Vienna. And beware: treatment with dermarollers on the face is not recommended, as fine scars can occur if used incorrectly. Nowadays, from a medical point of view, only electric pens should be used for facial microneedling.

Does needling produce scars?

No. As a rule, microneedling does not leave scars if the treatment is carried out professionally. It is a controlled procedure in which tiny needles create micro-fine injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve the skin’s structure.

What is the difference between laser skin rejuvenation and microneedling?

Laser skin rejuvenation often involves an ablative procedure that specifically damages the surface of the skin to stimulate the production of type III collagen. This method results in fine, usually invisible scars that contribute to skin tightening. In contrast, microneedling promotes the production of type I collagen, which plays an important role in skin structure and makes up 90% of the collagen in the body. This gentler method improves the appearance of the skin without damaging the surface and thus supports natural regeneration.
